Jim Nantz Described His ‘Play of the Year’ Award for Josh Allen’s Late TD Run

The Kansas City Chiefs’ perfect season was ruined on Sunday by the Buffalo Bills, who exorcised some regular season demons. There is no way in which anyone would voluntarily give the ball to Patrick Mahomes if he has a chance to win, so Bills coach Sean McDermott made the smart decision to go for it on a fourth-and-two with 2:27 remaining and the team ahead 23-21. By rushing around like his hair was on fire and tearing past the Chiefs’ defense to go to the end zone and a final score of 30–21, Josh Allen made that appear like a brilliant move.

During the moment, Jim Nantz, the lead commentator for CBS, referred to Allen’s crazy flurry as “the play of the year in the NFL.” He gave an explanation of his motivation after the extra point was successful.

“OOOH THE PLAY OF THE YEAR IN THE NFL!” – Jim Nantz during Josh Allen’s touchdown against the Chiefs on the CBS call.

“By the way, given all the stakes here, that’s why I call it the play of the year,” he added. “We happened to see that other little one down in Washington a couple of weeks ago but with all of this—the undefeated champs having what could be a knockout punch for the first time this year, this is about as big as it gets.”

This stance does not appear to be contentious. Although the Washington Commanders are having an unexpectedly successful season, the Bills’ victory over Kansas City will have greater NFL significance overall. particularly if Buffalo is able to overtake them as the top seed in the AFC.

It’s actually a little unfortunate that Nantz felt the need to explain what was a very strong decision because he was expecting criticism from online users who hadn’t been out of bed in ten hours. Holding everyone’s hand through the simplest cognitive process took a little zing out of the moment, but anybody with a working head knew what he was doing at the time.
