Trump picks former congressman

Sean Duffy, a Fox Business host, has been named the new Secretary of Transportation

The department’s incoming leader will face a variety of aviation safety challenges, including a spate of quality control and manufacturing failures at Boeing. There are also concerns of airline labor union strikes, as well as climate-focused projects such as electric vehicles and charging stations, that are anticipated to come across his desk in the future years.
The Department of Transportation, which was established in 1966, employs almost 55,000 people and leads the country’s efforts to improve safety, sustainability, and efficiency in all modes of transportation.

In the post, Duffy would succeed Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who was appointed to lead the agency in February 2021. Elaine Chao led the department throughout Trump’s first presidency before resigning on January 6, 2021, following the uprising.

Duffy first rose to prominence in 1997, when she appeared on MTV’s “The Real World: Boston”. The following year, he appeared in the network’s reality program “Road Rules: All Stars,” where he met his future wife, Rachel Campos of “The Real World: San Francisco.” Campos-Duffy is a co-host on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” where she has worked for years alongside Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for defense secretary.

Before running for Congress, Duffy was the district attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin, from 2002 until 2008. He was previously a professional lumberjack athlete and an ESPN color commentator.

As a congressman, Duffy introduced a bill that would have expanded Trump’s presidential powers to impose tariffs — something Trump has vowed to do in his next term. His fellow Republicans dismissed the bill at the time, but Trump praised him for it.

Duffy resigned his congressional seat in 2019, saying in a statement at the time that he wanted to spend more time with his family ahead of the birth of his ninth child and that there had been complications with his wife’s pregnancy.

Before joining WNE, FOX News, Duffy was a political commentator for CNN. According to Open Secrets, he also joined lobbying company BGR Group in 2019 as senior counsel, having previously represented clients in the defense, automotive, and air transport industries. According to Open Secrets, Duffy represented businesses including securities, transportation, banking, accounting, and electronics manufacture. BGR Public Relations President Jeff Birnbaum told CNN that Duffy was on the company’s advisory board, not an employee, and that he performed “strategic advisory work only” rather than lobbying.

Duffy resigned from the advisory board effective at the time of the announcement of his pick to be the Transportation secretary nominee, BGR said.
