Stefanik accepts the offer graciously. The president-elect has selected the Republican congressman from New York to represent the United States at the United Nations, one of his first cabinet-level staff choices.
Representative Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York, has been offered the position of U.N. ambassador in President-elect Donald J. Trump’s future cabinet.
Ms. Stefanik, a member of the Republican leadership in the House and a representative from an upstate New York district, has been an outspoken advocate for Mr. Trump. CNN has already reported on his decision to appoint her to the position.
According to her office, Ms. Stefanik has accepted the offer.
The 40-year-old Ms. Stefanik became a crucial friend of Mr. Trump during his initial impeachment trial. Although she has chaired the House Republican conference, she has little background in national security and foreign policy. She has held positions on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Armed Services Committee.
She has been a vocal supporter of Israel and played a prominent part in the congressional hearings that resulted in the resignations of several university presidents due to their control over student protests on campuses after Hamas’ terror attack on Israel and the conflict that followed in Gaza.
She also made an impression on Mr. Trump years ago when she vigorously defended him in the House during his first impeachment hearing.
Mr. Trump referred to her as a “strong, tough, and smart America First fighter” in a statement.
It looks like House Republicans will secure a slim majority in the next Congress. Their margin may become even more narrow as a result of Ms. Stefanik’s retirement until a replacement election is held in a seat that is thought to be secure for the party.
Whether Mr. Trump can raid the House to find his loyalists who work there is still up in the air. Republicans are currently on course to maintain their majority, but only by the same narrow margin that has made floor control challenging. Due to the party’s combined power in Washington, they are anticipated to generate significant legislative outcomes the next year.
As the first House ally of Trump to be named a cabinet member, Ms. Stefanik has long been setting herself up for success in a Trump administration. However, her circumstances can be especially challenging. The Democrat governor of New York State, Kathy Hochul, will probably wait as long as possible before calling a special election to fill her position.
The billionaire and ardent Trump supporter Elon Musk expressed his concerns over her selection on X, citing the narrow margin of power he anticipates in the House.
Mr. Musk posted on the social media site, “Elise is fantastic, but it might be too risky to lose her from the House, at least for the time being.”
