Comedian Bill Maher took a firm line during his show Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday, laying out his theory that Donald Trump couldn‘t be hurt by an October surprise. Why? Because the Republican nominee is “so awful” already that nothing could shock voters ahead of next month’s election.
“Democrats need to stop thinking an October surprise is going to save us from a second Trump term,” Maher said.
“We‘ve gotten so used to thinking that there’s always an October surprise coming that when it doesn’t happen it actually seems weird.”
After drawing a comparison between recent October surprises and Trump’s ongoing legal issues, the political pundit came to the conclusion that the former president was beyond ridicule.
“As ‘grabbing p—y’ is generally frowned upon, the Access Hollywood tape from 2016 was a classic October surprise that many people thought would work.” According to Maher, although the 2005 video sparked a heated discussion about Trump’s treatment of women, it did not prevent him from winning the election a month later.
Maher then outlined the revelation about George W. Bush’s 1976 DUI and the major splash it made just days before the 2000 Presidential Election.
“But okay these were much simpler times and quaintly this was seen as a big scandal back then,” he said.
“Whereas today Trump could drunk drive with a blood alcohol content of a million doing 200 on a side street and kill a crosswalk of kindergarteners and two ducks, and it wouldn’t move the needle at all.”
Maher warned Vice President Kamala Harris not to depend on an exposé to derail the Republican efforts at the eleventh hour.
He claimed that Trump’s greatest strength as a candidate is the length of time he has been consistently and utterly horrible, to the point where it is no longer apparent.
He has stolen from charities, tried a revolution, and assaulted a porn star. Dream on if you’re hoping for an October surprise to get him to shut up. And in a year, five trials? That is a lot of difficulties, even for a devotee. However, you can’t really surprise a voter who has seen everything.
The HBO presenter said that rather than focusing on how Trump’s “flaws” will deter voters, the Democrats should highlight the reasons why Harris is a superior candidate.
This is really Kamala’s biggest problem. Although Trump is unaffected by an October surprise, she is extremely exposed as she is the one who lacks clarity.
